Well, I haven't posted this week because I've been attending the local SWPPA convention in Arlington (the national was in January, this is the regional). While I did very well in print competition, the convention was too close to the national convention in January - and I feel like I blew a whole week schmoozing with other photographers. I'm a little frustrated right now.
Anyway, 3 out of 4 of my prints "merited" - which basically means they were good enough to show in the convention exhibit (about 40% of the over 700 total images from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Colorado merited and were shown). I scored the highest score I've ever achieved, and I won two "Distinguished Print" awards and one "Judge's Choice Ribbon". There were 5-6 "Distinguished Prints" in the "Portraits by a Master Photographer" category, and I won 2 of them - so I felt good about that.
Here they are - the first is titled "Girl, Interrupted". It won a DP and was my high score. The second is "The Magician of Sound". It won a DP and the Judge's Choice Ribbon. The third is "The Rendezvous" - it merited. The fourth print (not shown) was actually a back-up - I really wanted to enter a senior portrait I did, but I wasn't happy with the printing itself. I'll probably enter that one at the national competition later in the year.
Anyway, it was a good experience, but boy do I feel like I lost a week. I'll be posting four portrait sessions in the next two days.
Jess BriseƱo and Mercedes Gonzalez have been best friends since early childhood. They're both high school seniors now, and recently had their portraits photographed at the studio and Deep Ellum. They're also some of my furthest traveling clients - they're seniors at Stanton High School.
Matthew is at the beginning stage of a career in acting, and needs headshots. He's already a natural in front of the camera:
His session was also my first with my new Nikon D3. I tend to get excited about equipment, but I'm extra excited about this camera. I believe it's a truly revolutionary leap forward in digital technology - and it's going to allow me to do things I've wanted to do for years - namely, shoot without flash for significant portions of wedding receptions at night and shoot portraits without relying on my tripod.
I've been more sporadic on my posts lately than I'd wish. There are two reasons - one, this is a normally slower time of year for me, and two, I've been working round-the-clock to prepare for the upcoming spring rush (installing a new computer at the studio, preparing marketing, looking into new avenues of internet tech, figuring out my D3, etc.).
But, I will be posting a bunch of new work the next two weeks. In order, my client work will be - Burk, Briseno, Gonzalez, Tucker, Leal, Otway, Masterson, Rodgers, Donahoe, and Dugan. Somewhere in there I'll also post some stuff about my marketing and I'll also post this year's print competition work (the event is in two weeks).
